Moonlight Red is an acoustic duo formed in 2010 by Laren Corie and Donna Klein. Each is a successful performing songwriter in their own right. The dynamic created by the joining of their musical forces brings a different flavor to each of their compositions that is unique, rhythmic, and melodically pleasing to the listener. Donna has been playing guitar and singing since her childhood in the New York metropolitan area, and has been performing in concert and at festivals for many years. Eclectic and progressive, Donna’s music has provided listening pleasure to audiences from Florida to Michigan. Her tunes range from folk to blues to rock with an occasional twist of jazz. Some of her songs have been honored at the state level (Florida). While living in Florida, Donna created and hosted a concert series featuring songwriters from around the state and other parts of the country. A similar series continued after moving to northern Michigan. Donna has three independently produced recordings and looks forward to recording with Laren as Moonlight Red. Laren has been a serious mandolin player since childhood, raised on broad musical influences including bluegrass, classical, swing, various varieties of ethnic music, and hard driving Detroit rock and roll. In addition to mandolin, Laren also plays harmonica, giant mandolin (a “unique to Laren” instrument that was developed as a way to have a mandolin in the tonal range of a guitar), guitar, and violin. Being a multi-instrumentalist has provided Laren with a broad palette from which to write and arrange. The hallmarks of Laren’s musical style include complex interweaving of counter-melodies as well as instrumental and vocal harmonies, combined with an occasional furious flurry of notes. This provides the perfect complement to the intricate minor-major shifts and haunting melodies of Donna’s songs. Completely comfortable on stage, Donna and Laren provide an experience in which the audience will laugh, cry, and go home knowing that they’ve just witnessed something uniquely satisfying!
